How Nottingham treats business costs and waste
Nottingham is a unitary authority and one of the core cities of the East Midlands, now part of the East Midlands Combined County Authority alongside Derby, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Two things set the city apart for businesses. First, it decided against a Clean Air Zone: Nottingham was the first council in the country to have its air quality plan approved without a charging zone, helped by its trams, its retrofitted buses and its Workplace Parking Levy. Second, the council runs a large commercial waste operation of its own, serving businesses across the region from its Eastcroft base.
That means a Nottingham business is not short of routes for its waste, which makes comparing them properly the thing that saves money. Nottingham City Council's commercial service covers general, recycling, clinical and confidential collections and is a genuine option. A licensed private carrier often wins on flexibility, on matching container sizes and frequencies to what you actually produce, and on consolidating several streams and sites onto one contract and one invoice. We put both sides next to each other on a like-for-like basis.
Whichever route you take, business rates do not cover commercial waste and your duty of care to dispose of it legally is yours alone. We arrange collections across every NG postcode and through the wider East Midlands, from the Lace Market and the Creative Quarter out to Beeston, West Bridgford, Bulwell and Hucknall.

Nottingham's Commercial Waste Landscape
A snapshot of the sectors we serve across Nottingham, where the city's commercial waste goes, and the business-cost rules that shape a city-centre collection.
Nottingham's commercial waste, sector by sector
Nottingham's waste is shaped by a dense city-centre hospitality economy, two large universities and a corporate base that runs multi-site contracts.
-
City-centre retail and hospitality
The city centre, Hockley and the Lace Market run a dense bar, restaurant and independent-retail economy with heavy glass, food waste and packaging. Early or overnight collections keep busy frontages clear, and access around the pedestrianised core and the tram routes needs planning. -
Two universities and the student economy
The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent bring a large student population through Lenton, Dunkirk and the city centre, with sharp term-time peaks and a spike in bulky waste at the end of each academic year. -
Corporate and professional
Major employers with a Nottingham base run large sites needing confidential shredding with certificates, dry mixed recycling and consolidated multi-stream collections across several buildings. -
Manufacturing and logistics
The estates around Colwick, Bulwell and the Meadows produce higher-volume general waste, packaging and plastics on schedules built around production and despatch, often needing balers or compactors rather than more bins. -
Healthcare and education
The Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham City Hospital and the city's schools produce clinical, sharps, confidential and chemical streams needing documented handling and licensed disposal. -
Property and facilities management
Multi-tenant offices across the city centre and the Creative Quarter want consolidated collections, one invoice and compliance reporting they can hand straight to a landlord or an auditor.
Where Nottingham business waste ends up
Nottingham sends very little of its waste to landfill. The city's non-recyclable waste goes to the Eastcroft energy-from-waste plant, just south of the city centre off London Road, which takes waste from across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Burning it generates power and feeds the Nottingham district heating network through the council-owned Enviroenergy heat station, piping heat to homes and buildings across the city. It is one of the longest-running district heating schemes in the country. Commercial waste from private licensed carriers is processed across permitted facilities in and around the city. We arrange collections only with carriers who provide full waste tracking, so your duty-of-care records stand up.
No Clean Air Zone, but the UK's only Workplace Parking Levy
Nottingham is the only city in the UK to run a Workplace Parking Levy. It charges employers that provide 11 or more workplace parking places an annual fee per place, with the money ringfenced by law for public transport, and it is a large part of why the city was able to get its air quality plan approved without a charging Clean Air Zone.
There is an important point for waste. Vehicles used to deliver or collect goods are exempt from the levy, so your waste collection vehicle does not pay it and it does not reach your collection price the way a Clean Air Zone charge does in Bristol, Bradford or Sheffield. The practical upshot is straightforward: in Nottingham the cost of your commercial waste comes down to the service itself, the waste types, the frequency and the access, not an emissions or parking surcharge bolted on top. That makes a like-for-like comparison of carriers the single best way to control what you pay.
Simpler Recycling and your Nottingham business
Simpler Recycling is the national reform of workplace recycling, and it applies to Nottingham businesses in full whichever route you use to have your waste collected.
From 31 March 2025
All non-micro workplaces in England (10 or more full-time equivalent employees, counted across all sites combined) must arrange separate collections of:
- Food waste
- Dry recyclables (paper, card, plastic, metal)
- Residual (general) waste
Glass usually stays separate, which matters for the Hockley and Lace Market bars.
Micro-firm deferral
31 March 2027: micro-firms under 10 FTE reach the same standard, covering many of the city's independents.
Plastic film from 2027
31 March 2027: plastic film is added, a real change for the city's manufacturing and despatch operators.

FAQs about Nottingham commercial waste collection
Yes, and at scale. The council runs a large commercial waste operation from its Eastcroft base, covering general, recycling, clinical and confidential collections for businesses across the region. It is a genuine option, but a large operator is not automatically the best fit or the best price for your site, waste mix and frequency. We compare it against licensed private carriers so you can decide.
No. Nottingham decided against a Clean Air Zone and was the first council in the country to have its air quality plan approved without one. There is no daily emissions charge for a carrier to pass on to you.
No. The Workplace Parking Levy charges employers for workplace parking places, not for waste. Vehicles used to deliver or collect goods are exempt, so your collection vehicle does not pay it and it does not add to your collection price. It may affect your wider costs as an employer, but not this one.
Yes, every NG postcode and the wider East Midlands, from the Lace Market and the Creative Quarter out to Beeston, West Bridgford, Bulwell and Hucknall. Some NG districts sit in Gedling, Broxtowe, Rushcliffe, Erewash or Ashfield rather than the city council area, and we cover those too.
No. Business waste is controlled waste, and business rates do not cover it. You cannot use household bins, and household recycling centres are not for trade waste. You need either the council's commercial service or a licensed private carrier, both of which we can arrange or compare.
Yes, if you have 10 or more full-time-equivalent staff across all sites, since 31 March 2025. Micro-firms have until 31 March 2027, which is also when plastic film has to be collected for recycling. Every quote we arrange is compliant from the start.
The city's non-recyclable waste goes to the Eastcroft energy-from-waste plant off London Road, which feeds Nottingham's district heating network through the council-owned Enviroenergy heat station. Commercial waste from private carriers is processed across permitted facilities in and around the city, always with full tracking.
