Bristol asks more of businesses than most cities
Two things make Bristol distinctive for commercial waste, and both raise the stakes on getting your carrier right. The first is the Clean Air Zone, covered in full below. The second is enforcement: Bristol City Council's team makes regular visits to inspect business waste arrangements, checking that premises have proper storage, adequate space and the right collection frequency. A business found not dealing with its trade waste legally can be served a Section 47 Notice, and failing to comply can mean prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.
Bristol has been a unitary authority since 1996 and sits within the West of England Combined Authority alongside South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset. Household collection and recycling are run by Bristol Waste Company, which the council owns, and which also offers a commercial service. The city recycles around 48% of its household waste and sends close to nothing to landfill. For a business, all of this adds up to a place where compliant, well-documented collections are not optional. We cover every BS postcode and the wider West of England.

Bristol's Commercial Waste Landscape
A snapshot of the sectors we serve across Bristol, where the city's commercial waste goes, and the Clean Air Zone rules that shape every city-centre collection.
Bristol's commercial waste, and where the Clean Air Zone bites
Much of Bristol's commercial waste is generated exactly where the Clean Air Zone and the tightest streets are, which shapes how collections have to run.
-
Harbourside and city-centre hospitality
The floating harbour, Wapping Wharf, the Old City and King Street sit inside or right against the CAZ. Bars and kitchens here need heavy glass and food waste lifted early or overnight, on CAZ-compliant vehicles, without a lorry idling on a narrow quayside. -
Independent hospitality and retail
Stokes Croft, Gloucester Road, North Street and Bedminster run on independents, with a strong zero-waste and refill culture that expects genuine recycling, not landfill by another name. -
Tech, creative and professional offices
Temple Quarter and Finzels Reach concentrate the city's office employment. Confidential shredding, DMR and food waste on schedules that fit the working day. -
Broadmead and Cabot Circus retail
High-footfall retail wanting compactors and bale presses rather than more bins, with servicing routed around pedestrianised streets. -
Healthcare and education
Bristol Royal Infirmary, Southmead and the two universities produce clinical, sharps, confidential and chemical streams needing documented handling. -
Avonmouth industry and logistics
The docks and estates at Avonmouth, outside the CAZ, produce higher-volume general waste and packaging on their own logistics.
Where Bristol business waste ends up
Bristol sends close to 1% of its waste to landfill. The council-owned Bristol Waste Company collects household waste and runs the city's recycling centres, and the city's residual waste travels to Avonmouth for energy recovery. The Viridor Avonmouth Resource Recovery Centre, serving the West of England Waste Partnership, can process around 320,000 tonnes of residual waste a year and generates electricity for tens of thousands of homes. Commercial waste from private carriers is handled across permitted facilities in the Bristol and Avonmouth area. We only arrange collections with carriers who track waste properly, so your records are complete.
Bristol Clean Air Zone & city-centre collections
Bristol runs a Class D Clean Air Zone across the city centre, live since 28 November 2022 and enforced 24 hours a day, every day. Bristol was the first UK city ordered by the courts to bring in a clean air plan, and the zone charges every non-compliant vehicle type, cars included. Non-compliant cars, taxis, vans and light goods vehicles pay £9 per day; non-compliant HGVs, buses and coaches pay £100 per day. The penalty for non-payment is £120, reduced to £60 within 14 days. The standards are petrol Euro 4 and diesel Euro 6.
For waste collection this is a direct cost. Waste trucks are often HGVs, and a single non-compliant lorry servicing a city-centre site racks up £100 a day, which an operator running an older fleet will build into your price. This is where the carrier you choose matters most. We match central Bristol sites to carriers running CAZ-compliant vehicles, so the charge never reaches your invoice as a quiet surcharge.
Simpler Recycling, and why Bristol enforces it harder
Simpler Recycling is the national reform of workplace recycling, and in a city that already inspects business waste, compliance here is not something to leave to chance.
From 31 March 2025
All non-micro workplaces in England (10 or more full-time equivalent employees, counted across all sites combined) must arrange separate collections of:
- Food waste
- Dry recyclables (paper, card, plastic, metal)
- Residual (general) waste
Glass usually stays separate, which matters across the harbourside and Gloucester Road.
Micro-firm deferral
31 March 2027: micro-firms reach the same standard. Bristol's independents in Stokes Croft, Bedminster and North Street sit here.
Plastic film from 2027
31 March 2027: plastic film added.

FAQs about Bristol commercial waste collection
Yes, it can. Bristol runs a Class D Clean Air Zone across the city centre, 24/7. A non-compliant HGV pays £100 a day and a non-compliant van £9. If your collection lorry is non-compliant, that charge can appear in your price. We match central sites to CAZ-compliant carriers so there is no hidden surcharge.
Bristol City Council's enforcement team visits businesses to check waste storage, space and collection frequency. If you cannot show a legitimate trade waste arrangement, you can be served a Section 47 Notice, and non-compliance can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. Every quote we arrange gives you compliant collections and full paperwork, so an inspection is a non-event.
Both work. Bristol Waste Company, which the council owns, runs a commercial service, and there are licensed private carriers across the city. We compare them on a like-for-like basis so you decide, rather than defaulting to whoever quotes first.
Usually within a few working days. For central sites inside the CAZ we schedule a compliant vehicle to your round before the first collection, then deliver your free bins.
Yes, if you have 10 or more full-time-equivalent staff across all sites, since 31 March 2025. Micro-firms have until 31 March 2027. Given the council actively inspects, this is worth getting right early.
Your duty of care means you can be prosecuted even if a third party dumps it. Fines reach up to £50,000 with a criminal conviction. A licensed carrier and your Waste Transfer Notes protect you.
Residual waste is taken to Avonmouth for energy recovery, including the Viridor Avonmouth facility serving the West of England Waste Partnership. Commercial waste from private carriers is processed across permitted facilities in the Bristol and Avonmouth area, with full tracking.
